Lake Regional Health System is observing National Pulmonary Rehabilitation Week from March 8 to 14, highlighting its efforts to help people with chronic lung conditions improve their quality of life.
The week aims to raise awareness about pulmonary rehabilitation, which supports patients in regaining strength, increasing endurance, and returning to daily activities. The program is designed for individuals with conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis, and interstitial lung disease.
“Seeing our patients take a deep breath, walk a little farther, or return to activities they thought they’d lost forever is what makes pulmonary rehab so rewarding,” said Jody Corpe, E.P., M.S., manager of Lake Regional Cardiopulmonary Rehab.
Pulmonary rehabilitation at Lake Regional involves a multidisciplinary team. Physicians evaluate and monitor patients; exercise physiologists develop personalized fitness plans; registered nurses supervise sessions held three times weekly over six to twelve weeks; registered dietitians provide nutrition education; and patient educators assist with medication management and smoking cessation. Peer support among patients also helps address anxiety and depression related to chronic illness.
After completing the initial program, patients can join a maintenance program that includes spouses and caregivers. Additionally, the Better Breathers support group meets monthly at Lake Regional Hospital’s third-floor conference rooms to offer encouragement and education for patients and families. The cardiopulmonary program at Lake Regional is certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Services are available at the main hospital in Osage Beach as well as clinics in Eldon and Laurie.
The ongoing programs reflect Lake Regional’s commitment to supporting those living with chronic lung diseases through comprehensive care and community engagement.
