Washington, DC - Congressman Mark Alford (MO-04) has joined his Republican colleagues on the House Armed Services Committee in demanding answers regarding Secretary Austin's recent disappearance. In a letter addressed to Secretary Austin, the committee expressed their concerns about the lack of transparency surrounding his absence and questioned his ability to effectively lead the Department of Defense.
The letter states, "With conflicts around the world, it is preposterous that you and others in the Department allowed this to occur. This level of confusion surrounding not only your whereabouts but your capacity to lead the Department has shaken what little confidence existed in any previous commitment to transparency."
Congressman Alford echoed these sentiments in a statement, emphasizing the need for clarity and accountability. He expressed his concern over Secretary Austin's decision not to disclose his hospitalization to the White House, Pentagon officials, or the public. Alford believes that this secrecy is not only irresponsible but also dangerous. He stated, "We must find out who knew about this, why they kept it a secret, and what adjustments can be made to communication protocols moving forward."
Alford expects a prompt response from the Department of Defense and hopes that this incident will lead to improvements in communication within the department.
