Amid growing instability in the Middle East, Congressman Mark Alford (MO-04) joined House Appropriations Chairman Tom Cole (R-OK) on a bipartisan trip aimed at strengthening U.S. defense and reinforcing alliances. The delegation included House Appropriations Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), Representatives John Rutherford (R-FL), and Ed Case (D-HI).
"The world is the most dangerous today than at any point since the end of the Cold War," said Congressman Alford. He emphasized their commitment to strengthening partnerships with allies, particularly during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu where they reaffirmed support for Israel.
The delegation met with leaders from Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Israel to discuss ongoing conflicts linked to Iran's proxies and mutual objectives for regional peace and security. High-level meetings were held with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, King Abdullah II of Jordan, and Saudi officials to reinforce strategic alliances.
Diplomacy was highlighted as crucial for protecting American interests globally. The group aimed to bolster peace and security through enhanced engagement and partnerships.
In Israel, discussions with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Israel Katz focused on military operations, hostage rescue efforts including American citizens, and threats from groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. A visit to Mount Herzl marked a solemn remembrance of lives lost in past conflicts.
The trip concluded with a visit to U.S. warship officers in the eastern Mediterranean. Congressman Alford met sailors from Missouri serving on the USS Theodore Roosevelt, commending their role in defending against missile threats from Iran-backed Houthis.
