Following major storms in Missouri on March 14-15, 2025, Congressman Mark Alford from the Fourth District gained access to federal funds for Missouri Task Force 1 (MO-TF1). MO-TF1, managed by the Boone County Fire Protection District, is part of 28 Urban Search and Rescue teams across the nation.
“When disaster strikes, the first responders of Missouri Task Force 1 put themselves on the line to assist in rescue and recovery efforts,” stated Congressman Alford. He emphasized the importance of the task force’s role in Missouri and nationwide and expressed his pride in securing the necessary funds. Alford and his team’s actions were aimed at ensuring Missouri’s preparedness and recovery from natural disasters.
The storms caused loss of life and property damage, prompting Alford to utilize his position on the House Appropriations Committee to release up to $1.57 million in FEMA funds. These funds were intended for the Boone County Fire Protection District for previous deployments and preparedness expenses.
“Missouri Task Force 1 had its busiest year in 2024," said Scott Olsen, Boone County Fire Protection District Fire Chief and MO-TF1 Sponsoring Agency. "Not receiving full financial reimbursements and the inability to access necessary funds could have impacted future deployments. Thanks to Congressman Alford’s intervention, the necessary funding was unlocked within hours, providing financial relief to the task force."
Congressman Alford also participated in a letter led by Rep. Jason Smith, addressing President Donald J. Trump to authorize a federal disaster declaration for the areas affected by the storms and provide federal support for Missouri's recovery.
Missouri Task Force 1 is a part of the FEMA National Urban Search and Rescue Response System, consisting of 28 teams in 19 states. The Boone County Fire Protection District sponsors MO-TF1. This team, composed of individuals from across Missouri, has been crucial in responding to disasters such as the 9/11 attacks and Hurricane Katrina, proving instrumental in local recovery efforts during overwhelming events.
