Lake Regional Health System is offering flu shots at its clinics and pharmacies as the flu season approaches. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends annual flu vaccination for everyone aged 6 months and older, except in rare cases.
Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness that can cause symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue. While some people may only experience mild illness, others could face severe complications that require hospitalization. Annual vaccination is considered the most effective way to prevent infection and reduce transmission.
“It only takes a few minutes to get vaccinated, but that small step can make a big difference in preventing serious illness,” said Tony Kauten, PharmD, Lake Regional Pharmacy director. “Flu shots not only protect the person receiving the vaccine but also help reduce the spread of influenza in our community.”
The CDC advises getting vaccinated before flu activity increases, ideally by the end of October, since it takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop.
Additional preventive measures include covering coughs, washing hands frequently, and staying home when sick. However, vaccination remains the primary defense against influenza. Lake Regional provides flu shots through its clinics, pharmacies, and Occupational Medicine services. Most insurance plans—including Medicare—cover the cost of the vaccine.
All seven Lake Regional primary care clinics—in Camdenton, Eldon, Iberia, Lake Ozark, Laurie, Lebanon, and Osage Beach—offer flu shots to established patients during regular office hours. Appointments are preferred.
For children aged 6 months through 8 years who have never received a flu vaccine before, the CDC recommends two doses spaced at least four weeks apart. Children in this age group who previously received only one dose may also need two doses. Families are encouraged to start early so both doses can be completed by the end of October.
Lake Regional primary care clinics also provide COVID-19 vaccines.
